Hanukkah 2023 with Jewish Gateways
Eight Nights of Hanukkah in 2023: Thursday, December 7 – Thursday, December 14
Hanukkah is a joyful celebration for Jews and their families and friends. It lasts for eight days and is often called the Festival of Lights. During Hanukkah, we light a special candle holder called a menorah, adding one candle each night. We also enjoy delicious treats fried in oil, which is a symbol of the holiday, like potato pancakes called latkes and jelly-filled doughnuts called sufganiyot. Hanukkah reminds us of the miracle that happened long ago when a tiny bit of oil kept the candles of the menorah burning for eight days. It is a time for friends, family, fun, and remembering the importance of persistence and hope.
